From Greek Elisabet, a transliteration of Hebrew Elisheva, formed from El (God) and shava (oath), with the sense my God is an oath. The Hebrew form appears in the Old Testament as Elisheba, wife of Aaron, and the Greek form in the New Testament as the mother of John the Baptist.

Story

The name gained a cult in Europe through Saint Elizabeth of Hungary in the 13th century, known for her charity. In England it became very popular from the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century. Among its best-known bearers are Queen Elizabeth II (1926 to 2022) and actress Elizabeth Taylor (1932 to 2011).
