Of Greek origin, the Latin form of Loukas, probably a shortened form of Loukanos, "from Lucania" (a region of southern Italy); some scholars also connect it to the Latin name Lucius.

Story

It became common in the Christian world through Saint Luke the Evangelist, a physician probably of Greek ethnicity who travelled with the apostle Paul and is traditionally credited as the author of the third Gospel and Acts in the New Testament. In the second half of the 20th century the name grew sharply in popularity, entering the boys' top 10 in several countries, including France (by 1997), Belgium (1998), Denmark (2003) and Spain (2015).
