It is the Spanish form of the biblical name Matthew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, a tax collector traditionally credited as the author of the first Gospel. The spelling Mateo, with a single t, sets it apart from the Italian Matteo and the Portuguese Mateus, and has become very common across the Spanish-speaking world and the United States.
