Story
It was the name of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in the 12th century, which tied the name lastingly to the Portuguese monarchy; five more Portuguese kings later bore it, up to D. Afonso VI in the 17th century. It remains among the most popular boys' names in Portugal today.
