Origin
Of Hebrew origin, the Greek and Latin Biblical form of Hannah, from Hebrew Channah, linked to the root ḥanan (grace, favour).
Story
In the Old Testament it is the name of the mother of the prophet Samuel, and in the New Testament of a prophetess who recognises Jesus as the Messiah. In later Christian tradition Anna also became the name given to the mother of the Virgin Mary (Saint Anne), which spread devotion to the name across medieval Europe. It remains one of the most common women's names in Portugal and many other countries today.
