Beatriz
PopularA girl's name meaning traveller; later associated with "blessed".
Approved in Portugal. Beatriz is on the official IRN list of names you can register. Was in the national top 20 of 2023/24.
Origin
Spanish and Portuguese form of Beatrix, probably from Latin Viatrix, the feminine of viator ("traveller"); the spelling was later altered through association with the Latin word beatus ("blessed, happy").
Story
One of the earliest known bearers is Saint Viatrix (or Beatrix), a 4th-century martyr executed during the persecutions under Diocletian. In Portugal, Infanta Beatriz (1373-1420), the only daughter of King Ferdinand I, was married to John I of Castile and was proclaimed queen by some cities during the 1383-1385 succession crisis, though her claim to the throne was rejected after the Battle of Aljubarrota. Beatriz has again become one of the most given girl names in Portugal in recent decades.
