Origin
Of Germanic origin, the Portuguese, Italian and Spanish form of Bernard, formed from the elements bern ("bear") and hard ("strong, brave").
Story
It spread through medieval Europe mainly via two saints: Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th-century theologian and Doctor of the Church, and Bernard of Menthon, who in the 10th century founded hospices in the Swiss Alps to aid travellers (the source of the Saint Bernard dog breed's name). In Portugal it is a common boy's name.
