Charlotte
A girl's name meaning free man.
Approved in Portugal. Charlotte is on the official IRN list of names you can register. 23 births registered in 2014–2017.
Origin
A French feminine diminutive of Charles, introduced to Britain in the 17th century. Charles comes from Middle High German Karl and the Germanic root karlaz (man, free man), so Charlotte carries that same meaning.
Story
The name spread on royal prestige: it was borne by a German-born 18th-century queen consort of Great Britain and Ireland. In literature it is carried by Charlotte Bronte (1816 to 1855), author of Jane Eyre, and by the spider in E. B. White's children's classic Charlotte's Web (1952).
