Story

The name saw wide use among medieval European nobility. In Portugal the best-known bearer is Constança Manuel (c. 1318 to 1349), wife of the infante Pedro, later King Pedro I, and mother of King Fernando I. It was in Constança's household that Inês de Castro arrived at the Portuguese court, the episode central to the story that has linked the two names in national tradition ever since.
