Comes from an English surname derived from the medieval name Aveline, a diminutive of Old French Avelina, in turn linked to a Germanic root avi of uncertain meaning, often read as desired or wished for.
Story
When it first came into use as a given name in the 17th century it was more often given to boys. It came to be felt as almost entirely feminine, partly through its similarity to Eve and Evelina.
