Origin

Feminine form of Franciscus, from Late Latin, meaning French; the word traces back to the name of the Franks, the Germanic people from whom the name of France derives.

Story

The masculine name became widespread through Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), born Giovanni, said to have been nicknamed Francesco by his father out of admiration for French culture; he founded the Franciscan order after giving up his family's wealth to serve the poor. From there the name spread through medieval Christian Europe, giving rise to the feminine form Francisca in the Iberian languages. In Portugal it was one of the most given girls' names in the 2010s, with diminutives such as Chica still used informally.
