From the Germanic name Heimirich, formed from heim (home) and rih (ruler), meaning home ruler. The spelling shifted to Heinrich under the influence of similar Germanic names; in France the Latin Henricus became Henri, the form the Normans brought to England, where it settled as Henry.
Story
It was borne by many European monarchs, among them seven German kings starting with Henry I the Fowler, four kings of France, and eight kings of England, of whom Henry VIII is the most famous.
