Approved in Portugal. Lourenço is on the official IRN list of names you can register. In the national top 10 of 2025.
Origin
Of Latin origin, from Laurentius, "from Laurentum", an ancient city in Latium (Italy) whose name is linked to laurus, "laurel".
Story
It entered Old Portuguese (Galician-Portuguese) as early as the Middle Ages, with the form Lourenço documented from 1284, in Alfonso X's Cantigas de Santa Maria. The name spread through Christendom largely via Saint Lawrence, a Roman deacon martyred in the 3rd century, whose veneration made it common across medieval Europe under forms such as Laurence and Lawrence.
