Margarida
PopularA girl's name meaning pearl; the daisy flower.
Approved in Portugal. Margarida is on the official IRN list of names you can register. Was in the national top 20 of 2023/24.
Origin
Iberian form of Margaret, from Greek margarites (pearl), likely borrowed from an Indo-Iranian language; in Portuguese it is also the common word for the daisy flower (Bellis perennis, Leucanthemum vulgare).
Story
It spread through Christian Europe largely via Saint Margaret of Antioch, a 4th-century martyr and patron of expectant mothers, whose legendary escape from a dragon was widely depicted in medieval art. The name was also borne by queens, such as Margaret I of Denmark, who united Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the 14th century. In Portugal it has remained popular, ranking among the most given girls' names in recent years.
