Origin
Of Hebrew origin, the Portuguese and Galician form of Michael, from Mikha'el, formed from the elements mi (who), ke (like) and el (God), a rhetorical question meaning "who is like God?".
Story
It is the name of one of the archangels in Judeo-Christian tradition, described in the Book of Daniel as the protector of Israel and in Revelation as leader of the heavenly armies against Satan, which made him the patron saint of soldiers. Devotion to the archangel spread across medieval Europe, and the name became common in Portugal from that period onward. The Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, is one of the best known bearers of the Castilian form of the name.
