The name spread through Christendom via the apostle Saint Peter, one of Jesus's most important disciples in the New Testament. In Portugal it was borne by several kings, including D. Pedro I and D. Pedro IV, who was also the first Emperor of Brazil, reigning as D. Pedro I from 1822 to 1831. It remains a steadily used boy name in both Portugal and Brazil.
