Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Galician form of Roderick, via the Latinized Gothic form Rudericus, formed from the Germanic elements hrod (fame, glory) and ric (ruler, king).
Story
It was the name of Roderic, the last Visigothic king of Hispania, defeated in 711 at the Battle of Guadalete, a defeat that opened the way to the Muslim conquest of the peninsula. It also became tied to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, the 11th-century Castilian military commander. In Portugal it is a common name today.
