Origin
Of Hebrew origin, from Hebrew Shemuʾel, formed from shem ("name") and ʾel ("God"): "name of God". An alternative reading links the first element to shamaʿ ("to hear"), giving "God has heard".
Story
In the Old Testament, Samuel is the last of the ruling judges of Israel, who anointed Saul as the first king and later David as his successor. As a Christian name it spread largely after the Protestant Reformation and has remained in steady use across English-speaking countries.
