Of Greek origin, from Latin Theodorus, from Greek Theodoros, formed from theos ("god") and doron ("gift"): "gift of God". The feminine form Dorothea uses the same elements in reverse order.
Story
It was a common name in classical Greece and spread through the Christian world thanks to its meaning and to several saints, among them Theodore of Amasea and Theodore of Tarsus, archbishop of Canterbury. It stayed rare in England until the 19th century; in Russia it corresponds to Fyodor. It was borne by the American president Theodore Roosevelt.
