Origin
Of Latin origin, the Portuguese and Spanish form of Vincentius, formed from vincens, the present participle of the verb vincere ("to conquer").
Story
It spread mainly through several Christian saints, among them Vincent of Saragossa, a deacon martyred under Emperor Diocletian around the year 304. In 1173, King Afonso Henriques had his relics transferred to Lisbon Cathedral, an event commemorated on the city's coat of arms, which shows ravens guarding the ship carrying his remains; Saint Vincent is today the patron saint of Lisbon. In Portugal it is a common boy's name.
