Origin

From Latin Sebastianus, "from Sebaste", the name of a city in Asia Minor whose name comes from Greek sebastos ("venerable"), a translation of the Roman imperial title Augustus.

Story

The name owes its spread to Saint Sebastian, a 3rd-century Roman soldier who, according to tradition, was tied to a stake and shot with arrows during the persecutions of Diocletian, survived, and was later killed. Through devotion to the saint it came into general use in medieval Europe, especially in Spain and France; it was also borne by a 16th-century king of Portugal, Sebastião.
