Eleanor

A girl's name meaning the other Aenor.

Approved in Portugal. Eleanor is on the official IRN list of names you can register. 4 births registered in 2014–2017.

Origin

An Old French adaptation of the Occitan name Alienor. The most accepted explanation reads it as Latin alia Aenor (the other Aenor), distinguishing Eleanor of Aquitaine from her mother, Aenor. It has sometimes been confused with Helen, but does not derive from it.

Story

The name owes much of its spread to Eleanor of Aquitaine (12th century), queen of France and later of England, followed by other queens such as Eleanor of Provence and Eleanor of Castile. In the 20th century, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 to 1962) renewed its prominence.
