Origin

From Latin oliva (olive tree); Olívia is the Latinate feminine form popularized by William Shakespeare, who used it for a noblewoman in his 1602 comedy Twelfth Night.

Story

The name was rare in Shakespeare's time, and the spelling Olivia may have been his own creation or adaptation. It remained uncommon until the 18th century, only becoming widely popular from the 1970s onward, helped by television characters and the singer Olivia Newton-John. Actress Olivia de Havilland (1916 to 2020) is one of the best-known bearers of the name.
